My wife really managed to outdo herself for Father’s Day this year. In addition to the 2 bags of El Indio tortilla chips, she got me tickets to see Counting Crows and The Wallflowers in concert tomorrow night.
To understand how incredible this is, you have to know something about me first: Counting Crows are absolutely my favorite band of all time.
When August and Everything After came out in 1993, it immediately became the soundtrack to my life. I quickly wore the CD out from the continuous use, and had to buy a new one. To this day, the album has honored places in both my car’s CD player and my MP3 playlist. I own all of the band’s other albums, and they’re all in my regular rotation.
Despite the fact that they’ve been my favorite band for 20 years, I’ve never had the opportunity to see them in concert. Part of this is due to the fact that I grew up in a part of the country that bands don’t visit very often. Then, the Navy kept me on the move enough that I was just never in the right place at the right time…until now.
As if that wasn’t enough, my wife also got me a package where I get to sit in on the sound check and then MEET THE F’IN BAND!!!! In case you missed that, I get to actually shake hands and take pictures with the people that wrote every song that has been playing in my head for the past 2 decades.
When you throw in the fact that the concert is at a casino, so I can play a little poker, it’s just about the perfect day. In fact that only thing that could make it better is if my wife was here to see it with me. Unfortunately, that’s not the case, so I have the camera fully charged with room for over 800 pictures. I’ll have to make her believe that she was there.
