A few days ago, I had the opportunity to review Jason Andrew Bond’s first book, Hammerhead. I greatly enjoyed it, so I was looking forward to getting started on his second book, Mortal Remains.
Mortal Remains actually took me completely by surprise. Bond showed an amazing ability to branch out and write in an entirely different genre. While Hammerhead fell pretty solidly into the science fiction category, this book is much more of a thriller. The fact that Mortal Remains is every bit as good (if not better) than his first book is a real testament to Bond’s storytelling.
Erica had a lot of things going for her. She was beautiful and married to a man with enough money to provide her with anything she wanted. The dark secret was that her husband was incredibly abusive towards her. She finally decided that enough was enough, so she took matters into her own hands and ended up on the run, but she didn’t leave her old life empty handed.
The problem is that her husband wasn’t the simple boat salesman that he portrayed himself to be. He worked for the cartel. Now, they want their property back, and they have a very long reach. They catch up to her quickly, and she is powerless to stop them.
It turns out, however, that there are much darker forces at work than the cartel or Erica’s greed. There is a desperate and powerful spirit that is slowly devouring everything that comes within its reach. Erica has to discover a way to use that wayward soul to her advantage without falling victim to it herself.
The best word for this book is probably intense. From the very beginning of the book, there is a dark and foreboding feel that really keeps you on edge. The story begins in one direction, and then it takes a turn that you honestly never see coming. It’s a terrific thriller that will keep you wondering until the very end.
All of the things that I enjoyed about Hammerhead are also present here. The writing is crisp and fluid. The story flies by at a rate that will amaze you. You’ll feel like you just started the book, but you’ll look down and see that you’ve read 200 pages. It’s action-packed and the characters are very well developed and rendered.
Jason Andrew Bond is a terrific, self-published author that is a great find. His books are fast-paced, intense, and even when they have darker moments, surprisingly fun to read. With his first two books, you can feel free to read them in either order since they are not related to each other.
