On 23 October 1944 the Battle of Leyte Gulf, a wide ranging series of battles in and around the Philippine Islands, begins with attacks on Japanese ships. This image shows the Japanese “Center Force” leaving Brunei Bay, Borneo, the previous day, en route to the Philippines.
