Your Weekly Dose of SWO for October 9th.

My 3 deployments have all taken place on amphibious ships which basically means that it was our job to get the Marines and their equipment where they needed to be. One of the tools that we have to accomplish this mission are LCACs. LCACs are huge hovercraft that can transport all the marines equipment and vehicles to shore (normally, the Marines themselves don’t ride on LCACs, but there are ways to make that happen if necessary). To do this, amphibious ships have “well decks” which are basically huge holds in the back of the ship that we can flood to varying levels. We can embark LCACs and other craft in there, load up all the gear, and then they take it ashore. Here’s a cool video of an LCAC entering the well deck of a Navy amphibious ship.
