A Saturday Full of Soccer

I mentioned before that I’m coaching both kids on their peewee soccer teams right now. Their first practice/game was last weekend, and both kids did great. Little Dude was one of the leaders during practice, showing the other kids what to do, and Princess very nearly scored a goal in her game. This is great since it’s the first time that either of them have played in an organized environment. I also had a great time, and I learned a valuable lesson. 2 hours of coaching kids in the Southern California sun requires sunblock. Now I know.

Their next games are this Saturday, and we’re all looking forward to it. There’s also a coincidental occurrence that was almost too good to pass up. My favorite soccer team is Swansea City. There’s a story behind how a kid from North Dakota that lives in California likes a team from Wales, but it really isn’t that interesting, so I’ll save you the details. Basically, Swansea plays in the English Premier League, and they actually did very well last year considering that they are one of the smaller teams. Swansea is currently doing a preseason tour of the United States and playing 3 exhibition games. One of those games is going to be against the Ventura County Fusion in Oxnard, California.

Oxnard is about 3 hours away, and if it were any other team, we would probably pass. You have to wonder how many opportunities I’ll have to see Swansea play in person though. Therefore, we’re going to load up the car and make the trip.

It’s going to be a day full of soccer. The kids are going to play their games, and then they get to see how professionals (an English Premier team!!!) do it. It’s going to be a full day with about 6 hours on the road. We probably won’t get home until about 11:00, but at least we won’t have to fight to get the kids into bed. If it turns out that traffic is bad, we may end up stopping about halfway and going to Medieval Times instead, but I already bought the tickets for the game, so we’re somewhat committed.

Personally, I sincerely hope that they have some Swansea merchandise available for purchase. I looked into buying a uniform for the match. I’m not sure what the exact current exchange rate is between dollars and pounds, but there were a lot of numbers involved if I wanted to get it shipped here in less than a week. Therefore, I’m hoping that I can at least get a shirt or something while I’m there.

I think we’re all pretty excited, and it should be a lot of fun. The kids get a chance to see the game that they enjoy played at a very high level, and I get the once in a lifetime opportunity to see my favorite team. It should definitely be interesting.
