A couple days ago, my wife spilled the beans about how we first met over on her blog. While there are a few inaccuracies in her story (which I will address shortly), I’m ashamed to admit that most of it is true. It certainly wasn’t my finest hour, although it is worth mentioning that I made quite the impression.
As I was sitting around thinking about that night, I realized something amazing. The night was 10 years ago this month! I have known CinC HOUSE for an entire decade! I certainly realize that there are much longer lasting relationships out there, but when you read her post and see how this one got started, you have to admit that it’s pretty incredible.
That means that I have known her for almost a third of my life. We have been married (8 years) for a full quarter of my life. That’s pretty awesome for a couple reasons. First, prior to this, my longest relationship was about 18 months. Second, she has been able to resist the urge to stab me while I sleep for all that time. It takes a special kind of woman to accomplish that. (She also tried to dump me once, but I wouldn’t let her. It’s a funny story that I’ve never told because it’s a little embarrassing to her. Since she decided to bring up how me met, I guess the war has started though. ;-))
When you throw in the 3 deployments and countless underways that we’ve had to endure over that time, it’s even more impressive. She’s stuck with me through some tough times, and I have no doubt that there will be many more ahead. She’s a rock star, and I hope that we have another hundred years together.
Now, for some of the inaccuracies in her portrayal of how we met. As far as that actual night goes, I can’t necessarily refute anything she said. I wasn’t what you would call “sober” or “fully in control of my actions.”
One thing I will disagree with, however, is the fact that she said my car was what made the difference. I don’t think that’s the case at all. I have one piece of evidence to support this, and it was something that was incorrect in her story: SHE CALLED ME!!! Think about that. Would you willingly call a guy that completely creeped you out, just so you could ride in his car? That sounds like one of the worst ideas ever. She may have liked the car, but she called because of the guy sitting at this keyboard right now. She just couldn’t resist the charm. She was powerless.
So, what started out in a seedy strip club on the outskirts of Lawrence, KS has turned into a wonderful marriage with 2 terrific kids. Life is pretty good right now, and it just shows you that, sometimes, when you’re looking for love in all the wrong places, you find it despite your best efforts.
